On this day: the Benjamin N. Ogles

On this day, Benjamin N. Ogle and his grandson Ben N. Ogle passed away, 102 years apart.

Benjamin N. Ogle was born about 1815 in Delaware and passed away 27 Apr 1889 in Delaware City, Delaware. He was the son of Howard Ogle and Charlotte. He married Clara Matthews in 1841. He was a carpenter and for many years was the superintendent of the Delaware and Chesapeake canal. He and his wife had five children in Delaware City: Josephine, Anna, Lucy, Sarah and William, who was Ben N. Ogle’s father.

Thomas N. Ogle went to Delaware City this morning to visit his brother, Benjamin Ogle, who is lying very ill, with but little hopes of his recovery. He is 74 years of age, and for many years has been the superintendent of the Delaware and Chesapeake canal. He has always been faithful in the discharge of his duties, and his present dangerous illness is attributed to the exposure he has been obliged to undergo in attending to them.

Ben N. Ogle was born 20 Jun 1918 in Trinidad, Colorado and died 27 Apr 1991 in San Bernardino, California. He was the only son of William M. Ogle & Margaret McDougal. His parents separated early in his life and when he moved to California with his mother around 1920 or 1921, his father stayed behind in Colorado where he was a physician for the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company.

Ben N. Ogle, 72, of San Bernardino died of cancer Saturday at his home. Ogle, a native of Trinidad, Colo., lived in San Bernardino for 70 years.

Flenards of New Jersey

My third great-grandmother was Susan Flenard. She married Thomas Moore in Philadelphia in 1844. According to census records, she was born in New Jersey about January 1819. I don’t know anything more about her life before she got married, but there were a cluster of Flenards in the Mount Holly area of Burlington County, New Jersey, and that is where I have been researching.

Since Flenard/Flennard is not a common name, I decided to collect information on all the Flenards I could find in New Jersey. I’ve created a Flenards in New Jersey database to this end. Most were in or started in Burlington County, but also included are Flenards living in Camden, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer & Warren Counties.

The earliest Flenard I have been able to find so far is the right age to be Susan Flenard’s father or uncle:

  • Jacob Flenard born about 1795 married Hannah Fenimore in 1815 in Burlington County.

I found several Flenards who were born close enough to Susan Flenard to be her siblings or cousins. Two of these are named Jacob which leads me to believe there were at least two Flenard families in the area. All except Elizabeth were found in Burlington County, in or near Mount Holly.

I also discovered an Annie M. Vanhorn (née Flennard) who died at the residence of Susan’s granddaughter Olivia R. Todd (née Moore) in 1915. Her death certificate stated her parents were John Flennard (b. in Delaware) and Martha Platt (b. in New Jersey). Annie was born 19 Nov 1844 in New Jersey and may be Anne “Annie” Flenard, (b. abt 1842) daughter of George Flenard and Martha above.

On this day in 1754, my 5th great grandfather Johann David Hornef was born in Otterberg, Bayern (Bavaria), now of the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany.

He was the son of Wendel Gottlieb Hornef and Maria Louis. He married Susanne Weber in Otterberg and they had at least seven children there.

His grandson, Jacob Hornef, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1846 with his wife Katherina (née Faber) and infant daughter Catherine who would later marry Elon Carman.

On this day in 1873 Uriah Ware

On this day in 1873, my third great-grandfather Uriah Ware passed away in Gloucester township, New Jersey.

Uriah Ware obituary from the Camden Democrat 12 Apr 1873

He was the husband of Mary V. Coleman and they had nine children who lived into adulthood. Uriah was a farmer near Turnersville, New Jersey. As best as I can tell from comparing an old atlas to current maps, the Atlantic City Expressway now goes through the old Ware farmstead. The banner image on this site is of this area, described on the back of the original photo as “near Ware home.”

He was buried in St. John’s Methodist Church Cemetery in Turnersville.
